About the Program

Engag3D is a language training program using the latest learning technologies. In partnership with the Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga, SCF will pilot different learning methods via Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The goal of the program is to explore how newcomers can improve their language skills in an innovative and engaging way, to accelerate their integration and develop a sense of belonging to their new home, Canada.

Who can participate?

- Participants over the age of 18
- Newcomers who arrived in Canada within the past 5 years
- Participants with English CLB levels of 3, 4 or 5

WHAT

What are we offering?

- Free English classes delivered by certified English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers
- A welcome package to start your language learning journey
- Certificate of completion from the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM)
- A final gift upon completion of the classes

Where are the classes held?

- Classes will be delivered in person at the University of Toronto Mississauga

When do the classes start?

- The classes will be delivered in 3 cohorts and each student is expected to attend only one cohort.
- Cohort duration: 8 weeks
-Class day: Weekends
-Class duration: 3 hours

    I don’t know what my English level is, can I still sign up?

    Of course! Please fill out the form and we will guide you on how to do an online self-assessment to determine your English level

    Who is this program for?

    For newcomers holding a Permanent Residence (PR) status who are 18 years of age or older.

    Can I join this course online?
    Unfortunately, you cannot. This project is delivered in persononly at the University of Toronto Mississauga.
    What Covid-19 measures are being followed in the classroom?
    We are following the advice and abiding by the measures of the Public Health Agency of Canada.
    What will I get from this course?
    In addition to gaining new English language skills, you will receive a certificate of participation signed by UTM upon the completion of your course.
    What is the minimum number of classes that I have to attend in order to receive the certificate?
    You need to attend a minimum of 6 out of 8 classes to receive your certificate.
    What should I bring along with me to class?
    Just you!On the first day of classes, each student will receive a welcome package that includes stationery and all the learning materials you will need throughout the classes.
    How much does this course cost?
    This course is absolutely FREE and is funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
    How many participants are there with me in class?
    Each class will have a total of 8 participants.
    I’m currently registered in another English course, can I sign up for this one as well?
    Unfortunately, you cannot. This course is intended for newcomers who are not enrolled in another course. Since this is a research project, being registered in another course could possibly skew the results.
    Can I choose which class to join (AI, Traditional or VR)?
    Unfortunately, you cannot. Participants will be randomly assigned to classes.
    If this is a research project, will my data be shared with others?
    Absolutely not. We take extreme precautions to protect the identity and data of every participant in the project. Our research team will collect and store the data anonymously and securely. The data will only be used for research purposes to inform future programming.
    Can I bring my children with me to class?
    We apologize for the inconvenience, but children are not allowed in the classroom.
    Is there a parking lot at UTM?
    Yes, the UTM campus has a parking lot available for students’ use.
