About SCF

Inspired by the government commitment to resettle Syrian refugees in Canada, the Syrian Canadian Foundation (SCF) was founded in January 2016 and aims to empower newcomers and people of diverse backgrounds while promoting cross-cultural exchanges within Canadian society. We engage with partners and volunteers to build welcoming communities and culturally customized services for Syrian newcomers and other diverse communities.

Summary

Are you a person with a passion for empowering newcomers and refugees to enter the skilled trades? This is a rewarding opportunity for a motivated and highly organized individual to make a real difference in the economic and social well-being of newcomers by working to create meaningful pre-apprenticeship & employment opportunities that lead to a career in the skilled trades.

The Skilled Trades & Employment Program (STEP) aims to provide refugees and newcomers with the knowledge, skills and networking opportunities to increase their capacity to participate in careers in both Red Seal trades and other skilled trades through pre-apprenticeship programs and job placements.

Participants will be part of an online training program for three months to learn about the opportunities that a career in the skilled trades can provide, newcomer and refugee role models in the skilled trades, pre-apprenticeship opportunities and possible employers.  Participants will be introduced to further skill-building, employment, internships and career opportunities. Participants will be matched with pre-apprenticeship training opportunities through partner agencies; along with wrap-around settlement, language and mental health support.
