About the Syrian Canadian Foundation (SCF): was established in 2016 to support the resettlement of Syrian refugees in Canada. Since then, it has grown into a national charitable organization dedicated to empowering refugees and newcomers from diverse backgrounds.
SCF’s mission is to help refugees and newcomers thrive in Canada through innovative, community-driven programs built on three key pillars; language training, skills development, and well-being. By working collaboratively with community members, public and private partners, and other organizations, SCF strives to ensure that everyone — regardless of their background — has the opportunity to grow, contribute, and lead in Canada.
SCF is seeking a Board Chair to provide strategic leadership and governance oversight to our Board of Directors. The Chair will work closely with the Executive Director to help the organization fulfill its mission ethically, sustainably, and effectively.
This is a pivotal volunteer role for someone who brings strong governance experience and a passion for creating inclusive, equitable systems for refugees and newcomers. The Chair will lead with empathy and integrity, support a high-functioning board culture, and serve as a thought partner and champion for SCF’s growth.
Key Responsibilities
Governance Leadership
- Guide the board in setting direction, tracking impact, and fulfilling its core responsibilities in governance and oversight
Chair and facilitate quarterly board meetings, ensuring productive discussions and inclusive decision-making
Ensure board policies, bylaws, and governance practices are reviewed and followed
Lead the annual board evaluation and performance process
Executive Support & Partnership
Act as a sounding board and mentor to the Executive Director
Maintain regular check-ins with the ED to provide support, guidance, and accountability
Represent the board’s perspective and help align board and staff priorities
Board Engagement & Development
Cultivate a positive, inclusive, and high-performing board culture
Oversee board recruitment, onboarding, and succession planning in collaboration with the Governance Committee
Ensure board members are equipped to fulfill their roles and contribute meaningfully
Representation & Advocacy
Serve as a public ambassador for SCF when needed (e.g., speaking engagements, media opportunities, donor meetings)
Strengthen relationships with external stakeholders, partners, and funders alongside the Executive Director
Ideal Candidate
We’re seeking a Chair who brings:
Board leadership experience (preferably in the nonprofit, philanthropic, or public sector)
A strong understanding of nonprofit governance, financial oversight, and risk management
Proven ability to lead with integrity, empathy, and strategic clarity
Confidence in facilitating meetings, managing dynamics, and encouraging diverse voices at the table
A demonstrated commitment to equity, newcomer/refugee inclusion, and community-led change
Time Commitment:
- Quarterly virtual board meetings (90 minutes each)
- 2-3 hours/month for check-ins, mentorship, or committee leadership
- Occasional representation at public events or some in person meetings
